More than half of US adults are prediabetic or diabetic. According to the CDC, 6 out of 10 US adults have 1 chronic disease, 4 out of 10 US adults have 2 or more chronic diseases. Prediabetes and Type 2 Diabetes are two preventable chronic diseases plaguing the United States and worldwide. This morning workshop will include important statistics, physiology, and complications of Prediabetes and Type 2 Diabetes relevant to PT/OT patient care including key resources. We will discuss risk tests, the continuum from insulin resistance to Type 2 Diabetes, and apply the physiology of Type 2 Diabetes relevant to patient care. 93% of US adults are metabolically unhealthy so we will also connect the importance of understanding Metabolic Syndrome to treatment planning and modifications.
