Description
How can PT/OT help decrease symptoms, potentially minimize progression
of degenerative changes, and support other nondrug therapies and self-care
in our patients and clients with osteoarthritis?
This new virtual workshop focuses on selected lower extremity joints that are
common sites of osteoarthritis. According to the CDC, OA affects
32.5 million US adults, and OA is the most common type of arthritis
according to the Arthritis Foundation. During rehabilitation, clinicians
address what aggravates and alleviates symptoms to restore normal ADL
function, however they also can play a key role to help determine possible
factors that contribute to joint disease and help prevent further degeneration.
In an interactive, fast-paced, virtual learning experience, clinicians will be
introduced to current perspectives and new guidelines in the management of
osteoarthritis that may include many “ah ha” moments as we connect the dots
to optimize our patients’ function and minimize pain.

- Normal aging, dispelling myths, and imaging (radiograph, MRI)
- Exercise prescription and activity modification to minimize progression of joint degeneration
- Overview of new Clinical Practice Guidelines for evidence informed practice
- Hip and knee joint distraction and mobilization for ROM and symptom management
- Self-care and pain management strategies
- Functional tests and measures
- Basic nutritional considerations for patient education related to pain, inflammation, blood sugar, and edema
- Rehab-oriented overview of current regenerative medicine interventions and enhancing stem cell function
Objectives
By the completion of the workshop the participant will be able to correctly:
- Discern factors perpetuating symptoms and contributing to progressive degeneration.
- Describe the causes and impact of chronic, systemic inflammation on joint health.
- Discuss the role of PT/OT in skilled maintenance care for osteoarthritis including self-care, functional strength tests, measurements, “booster” sessions, and wellness strategies.
- Reference key points in Clinical Practice Guidelines relevant to their individual expertise, experience, and patient values.

Sheryl focuses on the practical, most direct treatments for her patients to see immediate results. Her exceptional clinical experience and teaching background enables her to actively involve her patients in their treatment program. Sheryl has used several key tools/props extensively in acute care, home health, and outpatient settings, including a variety of foam rolls, the Magic Circle, yoga blocks, straps, and STM tools. She has introduced them to hundreds of clinicians during the last 30 years to help them individualize treatment with every patient.
With a strong foundation in PNF from Northwestern University (PT school) and the Institute of Physical Art, Sheryl has added the Pilates Method and principles of Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement lessons to her rehab, exercise, and movement repertoire. She has also been incorporating ...
